What Did the World Look Like in 1800? Borders at True Size

In 1800, the young United States was a strip of land east of the Mississippi River, Sweden still ruled Finland, and Afghanistan was the Durrani Empire. TrueSize can load all three with their 1800 borders and lets you drag them side by side, so you see their real sizes instead of the distorted ones on a flat map.

The three countries in 1800

  • United States: independent since 1776, with territory mainly east of the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase came in 1803, and the country roughly doubled.
  • Sweden: still included Finland, which it lost to Russia in 1809. It was a large country on a map, but much of it lay in the far north.
  • Afghanistan: the Durrani Empire, founded in 1747, in Central Asia between Persia and the Sikh and Maratha states.

Use the Stats button on the Tools tab to read the area of the regions you load. Areas of historical borders are measured from the map outline in TrueSize.

Why distortion matters for history

Most old and school maps use the Mercator projection, which stretches land farther from the equator. Sweden lies between about 55 and 69 degrees north, so on a typical map it looks much bigger than it is. Afghanistan, at roughly 29 to 38 degrees north, is shown close to its real scale.

When you drag a region in TrueSize, it keeps its true area and changes shape as it moves over the sphere. Comparing countries from the same year, or from different eras, at the same latitude is the fairest way to judge scale.

Try it yourself

  1. On the Home tab, click the Modern/Historical switch to open the timeline.
  2. Use Go to year and enter 1800. Search for the United States, Sweden and Afghanistan (in 1800 the map labels it Kabul, Kandahar and Herat). In Historical mode, search shows only what existed in that year.
  3. To see the whole world in 1800, set the year and use Advanced → Load → Load All Countries (True Size).
  4. Drag the regions next to each other. Press the left and right arrow keys to jump to the previous or next change in the borders.

A region that did not exist in the chosen year appears as a chip reading "{name} · not on the map in {year}", with a reason such as annexed or dissolved.
