Suggest Flags, Names and Borders

TrueSize covers hundreds of thousands of regions, and its historical timeline has thousands of entries, so some flags, names and borders are missing or wrong. You can fix them: send a suggestion straight from the map, and once it is reviewed and approved, everyone sees it. Nothing you submit goes live without review.

A region's card on the TrueSize map with the buttons for suggesting a flag, a name or a better boundary

Click a region and the suggestion buttons appear at the bottom of its card.

Your own flag, only on your device

If you only want a different flag for yourself, click a region and choose Edit flag (the tooltip reads "Show a custom flag on this device only"). It is shown on this device only and is not sent to anyone.

Suggest a flag for everyone

  1. Click a region to open its card.
  2. Click Suggest flag for everyone. A short introduction explains that this updates the flag for all users and that only official flags are accepted.
  3. Click Choose an image… and pick a PNG, JPEG or WebP file of at most 1 MB. Use the crop tool if needed. Your image stays in your browser until you submit.
  4. The next dialog, Suggest a Better Flag, shows the current flag next to your suggested flag. Add a note with a link to Wikipedia or an official source if you can.
  5. Click Submit. You may be asked to complete a quick verification first.
The Suggest a Better Flag dialog comparing the current flag of a region with a suggested flag

The dialog shows the current and suggested flag side by side.

For many regions the card shows Suggest improvements instead. It opens a form where you can propose the official flag, alternative flags, coats of arms, emblems or seals. Alternative and fictional designs are welcome there, as long as they are labeled correctly. Coats of arms and seals are not flags, and fan-made designs must be marked as fictional.

Suggest a name

For historical territories, click Suggest name. Enter the accurate English name for that era, with no local or non-English names, and add a note with your source. The dialog shows the current name so you can compare. Names identical to the current one, or already submitted, are rejected.

Suggest a better border

  1. Click a historical territory, lake or river.
  2. Use Edit shape to correct the outline. See Draw and Edit Shapes.
  3. Save the edit, select the region again and click Suggest a better boundary.
  4. Compare the Current boundary with the Proposed boundary in the preview, add a note and click Submit.

Boundary suggestions are for individual historical territories, lakes and rivers.

Suggest a missing region in the timeline

When the historical timeline is open, Suggest a missing region lets you propose a new entry with its English name, the year it starts, an optional end year, a boundary (upload a GeoJSON file or use the shape you selected), images and a related region. If the entry belongs to the history of a country that already has a timeline, link it there. To fix an existing entry, open its card and choose Suggest improvements, where you can change a name, years, flags or boundary, or propose removing the entry. See Historical Borders Map.

What makes a suggestion get approved

  • Add a link to Wikipedia or another official source in the note.
  • Submit only real flags and coats of arms. Other images are rejected, and misuse can get you banned from submitting.
  • Official flags must be the real, official ones. If you are unsure, add the image as an alternative flag.
  • Use exact years and English names.

Where it works

Suggestions can be sent from the web and from the mobile app, which supports flag and timeline suggestions. Moderation itself happens on the server.

The map needs portrait orientation on small screens — landscape leaves too little height to work with.
