Flag Identifier: Find Any Flag by Picture, Colors or Description

The Find by flag tool in TrueSize identifies a flag from a description, a set of filters or a picture you upload. It searches an index of 49,692 modern and historical flags of countries, subdivisions, territories and more, and shows the best matches with a similarity score. You can then load the matching region straight onto the map.

Flag identifier results for the description: white flag with a red circle in the center

Results for "white flag with a red circle in the center", with Type set to Country.

How to find a flag

  1. Open the Tools tab of the ribbon.
  2. Click Find by flag. The Find by flag dialog opens.
  3. Do one of three things:
    • Type in Describe the flag, for example "red, white, and blue horizontal stripes with a yellow star".
    • Use the filters: Colours, Layout, Symbols, Shape, Type, Era and Seen in / near.
    • Drop, paste or choose an image of the flag.
  4. Look through Matching flags. Click Load more to see more results.
  5. Click Load next to a result to add that region to the map. It then shows Loaded ✓.

Use Reset all to clear every filter and start over.

Search by description

Type the description in English. The tool recognizes colors, layouts and symbols and shows what it understood as small chips (color, layout, symbol, shape, type, position). If it cannot find any flag features, it asks you to describe colors, layout or symbols in English. The filters work in every language.

Search with filters

Flag finder color and layout filters used to narrow a flag search

Filters for color, layout and symbols.

  • Colours: tap a color to include it, tap again to exclude it, and once more to clear it. Turn on Only these colours to hide flags with any other color. Colour position (top, middle, bottom, left, right, center, canton) narrows the search further.
  • Layout: horizontal, vertical or diagonal stripes, cross, Nordic cross, saltire, canton, triangle, quartered, border, plain or a centered device.
  • Symbols: star, crescent, sun, circle, cross, shield, crown, bird, animal, plant, weapon, building, map or text.
  • Shape: any shape, rectangular, square, swallowtail or non-rectangular.
  • Type: any type, country, subdivision, territory, lake, river or historical.
  • Seen in / near: type a place such as Poland, PL or USA to limit results to that area. Clear geography removes it.

Results that share the same flag design are grouped, so you see "matching designs" and can expand a group to list every territory that uses it.

Search with a picture

Drop, paste or choose an image. Crop it to the flag itself for the best result, then click Search this crop. The tool compares the picture with every flag in the index and labels each result as a near-exact image match or a similar image.

Flag identifier results for an uploaded picture of a white flag with a red disc, with Japan as the top match

Results for an uploaded picture: Japan is the top match.

Your image never leaves your browser. The image must be between 32 by 32 pixels and 10 MB.

How good are the results?

Each result shows a similarity percentage and short reasons, such as "has red" or "possible star". Treat the first few results as candidates, and check the flag against the region's name. Not every TrueSize territory has a flag yet. You can add a missing flag from that territory's card; see suggest flags, names and borders.

Examples to try

  • Describe "blue and white cross" and compare Nordic cross flags.
  • Upload a photo of a flag from a trip.
  • Filter by Type: Historical and a color to explore old flags.
  • Test what you learned in the flag quiz.

Where it works
