How to Select

  • Search by name, ISO code, or browse the time‑period dropdown
  • Click to add modern countries, states/provinces, continents, or historical territories
  • Choose from 60+ eras (ancient civilizations to the early 21st century)
  • Access 56,000+ regional subdivisions including US states, Canadian provinces, German Länder, Russian oblasts, and more

Selecting a historical empire from a time period

Load All from a Time Period

Use the "All" button to add every top-level country or empire available for the currently selected time period in one click. Note: The "All" button excludes continents and automatically hides country labels for better performance.

Load Countries and Regions with Their Subdivisions

Choosing e.g. "United States (all 50 states)" loads the US as individual state polygons instead of a single outline. Similar grouped sets are available for all other countries where subdivision data is available. You can drill down many levels—states, provinces, counties, and even towns and cities.

Loading Your Own Data

Have specialized or higher‑resolution data? Import your own GeoJSON or TopoJSON to supplement or replace built‑in layers.

Importing a custom GeoJSON file

After repositioning or rotating, export the modified geometry as a new GeoJSON. Export panel showing GeoJSON download option

Notes:

  • Custom data import/export is currently supported on the 2D map only (not on the 3D globe yet).
  • Export option is limited by 30 built‑in countries; your own imported shapes are not restricted the same way.
